Our Resource Database

Our Resource Specialist collects and maintains the information stored in the 211 SLO Hotline resource database. This comprehensive database includes information on more than 500 agencies and programs, with a primary focus on health and social services offered by agencies and organizations located in San Luis Obispo County. The contents of the database allow the Phone Center to provide immediate information and referrals to callers. The information in the database also appears on the 211 SLO Hotline website and is used to create our annual Human Services Directory.

How Information is Collected and Maintained

211 SLO Hotline is committed to maintaining an accurate database. Our Resource Specialist continually updates the database and works to maintain consistency in the indexing of services, agency or program inclusion, and writing style.

211 SLO Hotline's staff, volunteers and board members regularly attend community meetings and events to keep informed about local activities. A variety of newspapers and newsletters are also reviewed. The Phone Center is a major source of information since it is constantly accessing the database to find resources for callers and it is often the first to find out about new programs or inaccurate information.

All agencies in the database are contacted annually to review the information that is maintained about their programs and locations. Agencies verify their information, making any corrections or updates. Agencies are relied upon to keep the Resource Center informed of any new programs or if they are getting inappropriate referrals. Agencies that do not respond to requests to update their information may be deleted from the database.

Style and Indexing Guidelines

The Resource Specialist enters agency information into the database according to rules listed in an internal style guide. In general, information about an agency must include a description of its services and programs. There are many other rules that establish style usage, such as how to write addresses, hours, administrator titles, etc. Evaluative adjectives such as "innovative," "successful," "best" are not used.
